Four-week Integrative Intensive: Exercise Compulsion in Eating Disorders

 

Exercise can be a grounding tool in Eating Disorder treatment. The benefits of yoga for ED treatment have been tried and proven, but what about other forms of exercise? This program is designed to address traditional fitness training in a therapeutic way. Our objective is to help our clients begin to develop a healthy relationship with traditional fitness and exercise.

 

Each week clients will have:

  • Two 30-minute Personal Training sessions (*note the first session is 60-minutes)

  • One 90-minute Exercise Support Therapy Group (EST)

  • One 60-minute Individual Fitness/Nutrition Session

 

Exercise Support Therapy Group led by: Jill Lewis, MA, LCSW, CEDS, PC

 

This 90-minute group focuses on exercise compulsion, and the impulse for rigidity around it. Group members will explore emotional components such as deprivation, OCD, isolation, and accomplishment that exercise manufactures within. Cognitive distortions will be challenged in a supportive environment in order to start the process of breaking the cycle, and developing a new healthy relationship with exercise and oneself.  

 

*Program Group Dates: May 3rd, 10th, 17th, & 24th (all other sessions are scheduled individually)

 

Individual Fitness/Nutrition Session led by: Marjorie Nolan Cohn, MS, RDN, CEDRD, CSSD, ACSM-CPT

 

The individual session is personalized and focuses on any number of topics or exposures deemed beneficial. Be it nutritional counseling, fitness/exercise counseling, food exposures, meal/MST, and/or grocery shopping. If a participant is working with a nutritionist Marjorie will collaborate and gear individual sessions on mutually agreed upon topics.

 

Personal Training led by: Progressive Personal Training (PPT) Certified Personal Trainers

 

The goal of personal training is to expose our clients to a normalized exercise session without the stigma of having an Eating Disorder. We do this through individualized training that demonstrates how an efficient workout can maximize strength, minimize injury, and enhance recovery. Marjorie Nolan Cohn gives PPT trainers detailed guidelines for each group member in order to ensure physical, and emotional wellbeing is sound.  

 

 

Requirements for the program admission:

  1. Must have a primary therapist.

  2. Must have medical clearance for exercise.

  3. Must sign a release for communication with treatment team.

 

 

Getting Started:

 

Every participant will have an initial intake with Jill Lewis. The cost is $150.00. If both parties agree to begin to the program the initial fee is waved. A second assessment is scheduled with Marjorie Nolan Cohn to evaluate fitness/nutritional history, discuss training goals, and set up scheduling for the initial 60-minute personal training session. Total cost of the program is $1299. Payment is expected prior to program start. If needed, payment plans are available.
